Aug 18 - Swamp Tour

Atchafalaya Swamp Air Boat Tour!!! Wow, the swamp is BEAUTIFUL. There are over 800,000 acres of mud and a few inches of water. We are in the heart of Cajun country, and our guide had the thickest southern accent I have ever heard. He told us the ride would be loud, and bumpy, and we would hear some scraping sounds as we went through the shallow water. Actually, the air boats don’t even need to be in water. They can go over perfectly dry land. We didn’t need any life vests because he told us if we fell in, there was no way we could drown in such shallow water, but he said we would be a muddy mess!

I have never seen so many Snowy White Egrets in one place in my life! As the boat would approach, they all took flight at once – beautiful! There were huge dragonflies everywhere, and butterflies too. Because we had an air boat tour, we were able to go into parts of the swamp that are usually inaccessible to other boats. The swamp was filled with a specialized variety of a Cypress tree that can thrive in these wet conditions. At certain times of the year, when the levies spill over, the water line can come up 4 or 5 feet.

As we left the muddy shallows of the swamp, he really cranked up the engine. We sure needed that, with the intense heat and the extreme humidity, we were soaked right through our cloths! Suddenly he stopped the boat, and there he was. A huge alligator, right next to our boat!! With the glare on the water, I couldn’t get very good pics L . Where Rich and I were sitting, we were just inches from the water. The Alligator came right up to the side of the boat, just inches away from Rich’s arm! He could have pet his nose if he wanted to.

We were in the swamp for about 1 1/2hrs. If it wasn’t so hot, I could have stayed here all day. This is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places I have ever seen!
