Dec 5 - touring Phoenix, AZ

Today was a great touring day! We left our campground around 10:00am and headed to downtown Phoenix. When looking through our tour book, we saw an interesting possibility for an adventure - The Mystery Castle! After asking for directions (and no-one knew of it), using the phone tree directions and the directions in the book, and making a few wrong turns - we finally found it!! It was a great find! Boyce Luther Gulley began building this "home" in 1930. It was built from anything he found on the property. He even used various parts of his car such as the windows, hubcaps and hardware. The house had 13 fireplaces and 18 rooms. There was a bar, wedding chapel, outside Bar-b-Q, playhouse (for his daughter) several bedrooms, kitchen, living room dining room etc. etc. It was really eccentric but fascinating!

Next, we headed for the University of Arizona. Sad to say, the bookstore was closed :( We had hoped for some good shopping there. So then we went down the street for lunch at Schlosky's Deli.

The Heard Museum was our next stop. It houses a huge collection of Native America artifacts. Barb was in seventh heaven in the Katsina room! She and I had a chance on another trip to go to Second Mesa, the center of the Hopi Indian Reservation, and we saw many Katsina dolls , so to see this collection was very exciting!

After the Museum, we drove around two of the largest resorts in town; the historic Biltmore Hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Phoenician. We saw a beautiful cactus garden and some really plush homes (lot's of for sale signs).

We continued our drive to the Spring training camp for the Oakland A's!!! Yay - Mom and Barb have spent a lot of time volunteering for the Oakland A's, so this was really fun for them to see. It had been a long day, so we wrapped it up with dinner at Majerle's sports Grill - a hoppin place for fans to go before the Phoenix Sun's B-ball games, located in the stadium just across the street. It is owned and operated by Dan Majerle, a former player for the Phoenix Suns.

Long drive tomorrow!!
